Background: Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL) engaged MareLife, which again picked selected partners, to make an inventory on the possibilities and statistical strength of using DNA-based parentage tests to verify origin of escaped salmon back to farm. The report (Sept 2011), which concluded on the feasibility of this and to a comparatively low cost, can be found here.

During 2012 MareLife, together with the same partners and with AquaGen as project leader, carried out a project to verify under practical condition whether the concept of DNA tracking could securely assign escapee back to correct parent and hence correct site of escape. Micro algae report. A very important delivery from the project is the microalgae market report: “Microalgae - a market analysis carried out as part of the Interreg KASK IV A project: Blue Biotechnology for Sustainable Innovations, BlueBio”. The report takes a global view on markets and technologies available and narrows down to Nordic and KASK in the final parts with recommendations on how to follow up with moving from science to business. The report has been well received widely and can be found at:

The construction work commenced early May and the center will be ready for inauguration in about 5 months.

The center will harbor approx. 20 offices for marine companies, meeting room facilities, a mingling area and headquarter office MareLife.

Can Norway as a traditional coastal nation maintain its position, our must we think and act differently based on research and new knowledge? If Norway is to continue as an important aquaculture nation, we must improve our knowledge-sharing, innovation and competence-building. AQUA2013 aims to bring together interested parties who would like to learn more about utilizing the bioeconomy in relation to food production, the environment, growth and societal development.

The North Atlantic Seafood Forum (NASF) expects over 500 delegates from more than 30 countries and 350 companies to attend.
